I am Legend - Review

Its a kind of a science fiction, which has very good mental impact through visuals.

Think of a situation when you are alone in a city like New York where you are surrounded by blood thristy night zombies. Horrific, Pitiful fate! Anytime you may lose your life. But Will Smith became one man army to find a cure to the virus affected zombies. Every attempt he makes will surely bring us to the edge of the seat. Finally he finds the medicine & loses his life.

Will Smith showed sparkling acting ability in situations like - when he kills his virus affected dog, when he thought that a toy is a human being on the road, when he talks to a lady doll in a DVD shop. He is certainly a Legend in Hollywood cinema!

Kalluri - Review

Director decided on the climax of the movie and then did all the scripts. He ensured laughter in the begining and in equal intervals. After that he brings love, friendship into the story. Each character selection is perfectly fitting to village students role.

Around 10 students studied in the same village school coming together again in college. Out of which Muthu, a sports person, is our hero. Shobana, city brought up, who joins the college temporily initially and make her stay in the college permanent. Hello, wait, wait. Don't think this is usual poor village guy & rich city girl movie. There is no division in friends & no fight between them after interval. No masala stuff. Its different in flavour. One girl character named Kayal Vizhi was nicely plotted & it was done so well by the actress - I hate that character to the core!

At the end, Shobana, Kayal Vizhi and another girl lost their life when the bus they toured was set ablaze by some political miscreants(this resembles Dharmapuri bus burning incident).

Strategy & McKinsey 7S Framework - An Intro

Strategy

In general, strategy can be termed as a plan for achieving success, the combination of decisions & activities to achieve the goals. Strategy is the path we choose. Strategy not only fits in organizations context but also to individuals. Everyone need to identify what they want to achieve and the how to make it possible in every aspects.

McKinsey 7S Framework

McKinsey 7S framework is considered as one of the major landmarks made in Strategic Management. The McKinsey 7S model was named after a consulting company, McKinsey &Co., which has conducted applied research in business and industry. (Pascale & Athos, 1981; Peters & Waterman, 1982).

All of the authors worked as consultants at McKinsey and Company; in the 1980s, they used the model to analyze more than 50 large organizations. The McKinsey 7S Framework was created as a recognizable and easily remembered model in business.

General Usage of Model

The 7S model can be used in a wide variety of situations where an alignment perspective is useful, for example:

  • Improve the performance of an organization
  • Examine the likely outcome of future changes within an organization
  • Align departments and processes during a merger or acquisition
  • Determine how best to implement a proposed strategy

7S model is so generic, which can be used to align project teams and issues related to departments also.

The Seven Elements of McKinsey Model

7smodel

The basic premise of the model is that there are seven interdependent internal aspects of an organization(which the authors term "levers") that need to be aligned if it is to be successful.

They are Structure, Strategy, Systems, Skills,

Style, Staff and Shared Values ( it is called as 7S as all begin with the letter "S")

These 7S are categorized as either “hard” or “soft” elements:

Hard Elements Soft Elements
Structure Shared Values
Strategy Skills
Systems Staff

Style

Hard” elements are feasible and easy to define or identify in an organization as they are normally well documented and seen in the form of tangible objects or reports such as strategy statements, corporate plans, organizational charts and other documents, & the management can directly influence them.

Soft” elements, on the other hand, can be more difficult to comprehend, and are less tangible and more influenced by culture. However, these soft elements are as important as the hard elements if the organization is going to be successful.

Short Definitions

Structure is defined as the skeleton of the organization or the organizational chart.

Strategy describes the plan or course of action in allocating resources to achieve identified goals over time.

Systems are the routine processes and procedures followed within the organization.

Shared values aspect, originally termed superordinate goals, refers to the significant meanings or guiding concepts that organizational members share.

Staff are described in terms of personnel categories within the organization.

Skills refers to the capabilities of the staff within the organization as a whole.

Style is the way in which key managers behave in achieving organisational goals is considered; this aspect is thought to encompass the cultural style of the organisation.

Individual Retirement Account - IRA

I collected some information about IRA. It may be useful to anyone looking for the information.

IRA - Individual Retirement Account is something like tax benefit account other than 401(k). If you already have 401(k) available in your organization then it is better to avail that.

If you want to have a replacement for 401(k) then you can go for IRA. IRA has different schemes. One type is having almost same benefit as 401(k) i.e. pre-tax. Another type is having benefit on after-tax assets. One advantage you have through IRA is - you can invest the money in that account in stocks, MFs, houses and other asset building activities.

One can operate this account even they return to their home country. But to start the account, SSN and/or US address is required. It has 58.5 years as age limit for maturity. Even one can withdraw the amount before that with penalty. One can use IRA to save amount for non-salaried person also.

Good banks in which you can start are Charles Schwab(http://www.schwab.com/) or Fidelity (https://www.fidelity.com/)

Better to ask about everything - i.e. benefits of different types, if you move to your country what is the procedure to get the money, what is the procedure for pre-closure, how to use the money for stocks/MF, etc., what is the maximum amount you can invest to avoid taxes.

Wikipedia link to IRA - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Individual_retirement_account

In Indian context - To have better understanding - Equivalent of 401(k) is PF. Equivalent of TRA is PPF.

Run towards fear

Tell me one single thing that affects every individual's growth? Yes, It is 4-letter word called FEAR.

There is a saying in old ages - "Run towards fear, because peaceful life resides on the other side of the fear."  Also, "Fear kills a person everyday but actual death kills only once." is another saying about Fear.

FEAR as an acronym stands for “False Evidence Appearing Real”. This false evidence can take many forms, but the thing is that it appears to be real. We find something to be frightening than it really is.

So don’t waste your time to fear losing. Instead, spend your time in identifying your biggest fears in life. These are the fears that hold you back the most.

The top fears of people are :

  • Fear of failure.
  • Fear of success. This fear comes from our childhood. What would people think if we became too successful ? Fears are one’s shadows. Fears need to be brought from one’s sub-conscious to one’s consciousness.
  • Fear of rejection.
  • Most people do not feel good enough. Deep down they feel they are frauds. Most people who are arrogant are insecure. Truly humble people have worked through their insecurities.
  • Fear of not having enough. Happiness is an act of will. It comes from one’s inner life and not from the satisfaction of the senses. Happiness is an inside job.
  • Fear of loss. Of losing control. Of not being in control. Of being insignificant. Of not having made a difference. Of death.

Plan accordingly to attack these “untrue assumptions”. Without a plan, it is not possible to remove these fears.

And move towards these fears. You will discover that the closer you move towards that which you fear, the less scary those fears are. Sort of like the first time you stood up to the school bully and realized that he or she was not so tough when confronted. You were perceiving based on “false evidence”.

Moving towards fear in your daily life means doing that which you hate/detest/fear/loathe/don’t want to do, and doing that thing first, before all else. For me, that means going to shop at 8 pm on those dark dog barking nights. For you it might mean something else. However, the key to beating back our irrational and disabling fears is to run, not walk, towards them at every chance. By doing so, you will prove to yourself how silly those fears are in the first place, as they provide no inherent value in your life. They merely hold you back from reaching your true potential.

Here is a very good Podcast on Run towards fear by famous writer Robin Sharma. Worth hearing it.

What you think is what you get...

In number of web page editor, you would have seen WYSIWYG. What is this WYSIWYG stands for? It is an acronym for What You See Is What You Get.

This would be right for editors. But in life your thinking process is the one which determines What you are and What you become. So I call it as What You Think Is What You Get (WYTIWYG).

Till date, the unique quality you show is called your characters or behaviors. It differs with time and context. Imagine this way. You are in exactly same situation ten days before and now - consider everything is same except the time, but your behavior wouldn't be the same in both the occasions. Why are you seeing the same item in two different ways? What made you to differ? It is your thinking process that made the difference.

Your thoughts have the power to curse or bless. They can lead you to plenty, abundance and surplus. The choice is yours. You can control your thinking. Your thinking controls your behavior. Your behavior controls your results.

If you think you are a strong guy then you will become strong guy.. if you think you are the weakest then you become weak.. ( words by Vivekandanda). Why to waste our time in thinking ourself as weak guy? Let us aim the higher side and think we are mighty enough to solve the challenges put in front of us.

Windows Live Writer - Blog posting comes handy!

I heard about this today. I found http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/ has the download.

It is cool & user friendly. It can be integrated with any weblog like myspace, blogger, etc. This is standalone having almost all features you see in MS Word tool. So, easy to start using the features. It has the remainder features for tags, title and categories.

There exists another add-on in FireFox called ScribeFire which is used to post with simple and ease. It has few advantages of being part within the web browser itself. But I found posting of images from it not working most of the time.

Evanoo Oruvan - Review

I can say - "This is Madhavan's second best performance in his cinemas" (first one I consider the one in 'Anbe Sivam').

It portrays everyday event of a soft guy who turns to be terror to the police. Though Madhavan is making a sad feeling at the end but there is not much impact on the viewer when film finishes by keeping low profile.

Though it is a remake of award winning marathi film 'Dombivli Fast', it leaves few questions in our mind. What does the director want to achieve by killing the hero?

It is indeed a Good film. Worth Watching. You may cry in the last scene.

Happy New Year 2008!

I wish you all to have a very Happy New Year 2008!
