Transformational Leadership Theory

To better explore this topic, we need to have a good grounding on what this theory is all about. People want to explain a lot of things. They observe a lot of people and a lot of phenomenon and processes in the world and they begin to form their opinions. Sometimes the opinions become ways to predict behavior and other things. As they get better at it, they try to explain the causes of certain kinds of behaviors or phenomena based on their observation.

This is actually what theory is all about. It is a way of explaining the relationships and interconnections of different variables and factors in the environment. What kinds of effects will these things produce? What causes a certain kind of behavior? This is what theory is all about.

Transformational leadership theory then seeks to explain the kind of behavior in the leader that would produce the best transformation or change in the lives of the followers and subordinates as well as in the constituency of the organization.

It is not very easy to explain away the behavior of leaders but because we can pool together several sets of behaviors, we can readily observe what leadership traits work and which ones don't.

Some people say that leadership is a calling. Others claim that leadership is more a function of popularity and formal authority. No matter what people say, leadership is one difficult job that requires a person to do things that are oftentimes difficult and usually meets resistance from various sectors in the organization or in the society.

One of the aims of any organization is to change lives. Whether that is done through selling products and offering services or promoting a particular way of doing things. This requires leadership. Without effective leadership, the organization will be hard put to achieve its goals and objectives. In the first place, most organizations do not even know their vision and their mission without the help of a leader.

Change is but another term for transformation. Yet, transformation is an entirely different word. It connotes a more powerful level of change. If an organization is transformed, it means that the people in that organization have learned to subjugate personal interests in favor of the organization's. A leader who can do that can effectively change the world.

This is essentially what transformational leadership theory is all about. It seeks to put together various elements of the organization in order to reach synergy and change. The transformational leader is not just taking a walk in the park, he knows the organization's vision and mission by heart and encourages other people to do that. For the transformational leader, however, subordinates are more than just followers, they are people that must be cared for and transformed, too!
